"Northern Black Sea from Late Byzantine till Ottoman times: Transformation of Material Culture in a Changing World"

The project focuses on the study of remarkable changes in material culture of the Northern Black Sea Region, which took place between the restorations of Byzantine rule in Constantinople in 1261 up to the conquest of the region by the Ottomans in the last quarter of the 15th century.

It concentrates on both in-depth analyses and syntheses of data acquired in a multidisciplinary approach to the study of archaeological material, especially ceramics. Among the objectives of the project is a comprehensive analysis of the origin and distribution of ceramics in the Northern Black Sea area in the late 13th – 15th centuries; the examination of the innovations in the local pottery traditions and the changes in ceramic imports; the exploration of the evolution of pottery manufacture.

It aims at clarifying the emergence and transformation of the different cultural traditions and the reasons for the change in material culture in the Northern Black Sea Region in the late 13th–15th centuries, as well as their correlation with events known from the historical records.
